Bookseller's Thesaurus

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bookzing?

Bookzing is a website designed to helping booksellers write better book descriptions, easily and quickly, including useful phrases and defined terms. Paid membership lets subscribers build and edit descriptions quickly and easily within the site, and save and modify them for later use.

What’s the point?

Good descriptions sell books faster and for more money. With Bookzing the time and effort it takes to describe a valuable book drops dramatically while effectiveness of the description goes up. That means less time writing and more money, faster, from sales.

How did Bookzing begin?

We begin using a copy of Dealer’s Thesaurus in my used, rare, and out-of-print bookstore, Michael's Books in Bellingham Washington. We found it invaluable in writing catalog descriptions of our books for sale. We sold dozens of copies in our store and online to people all over the world. When I contacted publisher Lynn Vigeant to order more books in 2006 I asked if she intended to reprint, as the stock was running low. She said “No” and offered me the opportunity to buy the rights. I felt it was ready to be expanded and offered to the bookselling trade as a reference and workbook. Bookzing is the result.

How have you improved on the original book?

We have expanded the contents with many more descriptive phrases, plus suggestions from working booksellers. Then we put in keyword phrase and definition searches. Paid subscribers can simply click to copy them into the “Description Builder” box, where they can be edited to build unique, powerful, accurate descriptions quickly and easily. Favorite phrases can be accumulated and descriptions saved for reuse and later editing for similar titles. We’ve made a useful start, we think, and there’s more to come.

Can I suggest new phrases?

Yes, we invite you to do so. If you are suggesting a variation on an existing phrase use "Add a new phrase" in the sub-category you are submitting it in. You’ll get subscription credit for ones we add to the collection. How much? (LINK TO FAQ ON THIS)

Can I suggest an edit to a dictionary definition?

Yes. Click "Make a suggestion" at the bottom of any page and tell us what you think needs changing and how.
